Summer is coming to an end and a new school year is right around the corner!
The start of the school year is always a big deal. Whether it’s your little one’s first day ever, or your teen is returning for another year of highschool, it is a hectic and emotional time. This year in particular, all parents are facing the difficult decision on whether or not to send their kiddos back to school or to keep them home.
Whatever decision you make is the best decision for your family, and I’d like to help you feel relaxed and prepared with these tips for an organized return to school (or homeschool):
1. Snack Station: Whether kids are heading to school or are staying home, they've got to eat. Every parent knows how often their little ones can ask for snacks. Be prepared with a snack station where they can grab things to pack their own lunch for school, or help themselves when at home so they don't disturb your conference call.
2. Create a Drop Zone: Fall brings wet weather, jackets, boots, and bookbags. Create a drop zone in your garage/mudroom/entrance where kids can hang up wet coats, place wet shoes on boot trays, and leave their backpacks out of the way.
3. Create a clear homework space: A dedicated space can make homework more fun, help motivate your child, and also separate school from home life. Ideally, you would want to set up a desk with supplies and a chair. If you are using a common area, like your kitchen table, try using a mobile supply station that can easily be moved in and out of the space.
4. Family Command Centre: With the return to school -- or trying to organize homeschool lessons -- there can be a lot of info coming and going, or just circulating in your head. Create a Family Command Centre where you keep a family calendar, your grocery lists, and a way to keep track of the different assignments that are due. Label everything and take time every week to go over schedules, due dates, and anything outstanding.
