No matter how much you love your house, there may come a time when you need a change, and when that time comes, it’s best to stay calm. We wanted to share a few tips and tricks we’ve learned to save you time and headaches. Deep breaths!
Take inventory
This is the perfect time to take a step back and look at the things you’ve accumulated over the years. It’s natural to keep things you’ve received as gifts or bought once upon a time when you needed it - and that’s OK! But now might be the time to review.

It’s okay to let go, and in fact, it can be really comforting knowing that your things are going to someone else who might appreciate it more or give it new life. This can be a family member, friend, a thrift store, or a charitable organization.
The advantage of doing this while you’re getting ready for your move is that you’ll ultimately have less to unpack once you’re in your new home and this means you’ll be better set up to create your ideal space.
Consider hiring professionals
The moving industry has created a service for your every need. From organizers (like us!) to movers and packers (us again!), there are people ready to help. Working with a company can take the stress off you, letting you focus on the exciting parts.
With the COVID-19 situation, it’s particularly important to trust the people you’re hiring. Make sure you feel comfortable with their safety procedures and don’t be afraid to ask them about it.
Shameless plug alert: Our services actually connect you to or take care of all the move coordination pieces you need to have a seamless and stress-free move. Once your dates have been picked, we can help you stage your home, sort, declutter, pack, coordinate your move, and set your new home up with systems to really shine.Label everything, trust us
There’s nothing more frustrating than getting into your new space and searching furiously for that item. When we’re packing for a client, we make sure to not only carefully pack things into boxes with similar items from the same room, but we label each box, colour code them and create an inventory sheet so we know how many boxes there are and what they hold.
Using colour coded stickers or tape you can purchase online helps you identify boxes at a quick glance and immediately know what room they go in.
Pro tip: Mark the boxes you need to unpack first with star stickers and ask your movers to make sure they come out of the truck first (that means they need to go in the truck last).
But most of all, deep breathes
You’ve got this. It can be a stressful process, there’s no doubt about it, but don’t forget that it’s also exciting! It’s a new chapter in your life and a new opportunity. You get to create the home you want right from the beginning.
Of course, as home organizers, we geek out over systems that keep you organized. It can be a fun experiment to get the family involved and build ways to stay organized in the long run.
