Where do I start?
This is probably one of the most common questions I get asked when people are looking for info on how to organize their home.
When you’ve got a lot of rooms that need work, it can be hard to know where to begin. Let’s be honest - when you’re decluttering your house and organizing your closets, you’re going to make a mess before you get it all cleared and organized.
It is so important to have a plan and strategy for how to accomplish your goals from beginning to end because without it, you’ll get lost somewhere in the middle.
This is why with all our clients, we start by creating a plan.
But even the plan has to start somewhere and I always recommend starting somewhere small and then starting with storage.
Here's why:
Starting somewhere small, be it a junk drawer, cabinet, small nook or maybe even a little closet, and completely organizing that small space will give you an immediate reward and gratification - proof that organizing makes you happier.
From there, when it’s time to really dig in, I always say start with storage because without an organized storage space you’ll have nowhere to put all the things you decide you want to store when you declutter the rest of your home. What’s more, if you organize the other spaces in your home without addressing the storage space, you’re basically just sweeping the dirt under the rug.
Here’s the thing that matters most, regardless of where you start. . . Finish!
I can’t stress this enough. It can be really tempting to dive in full force and want to do your whole house at once, but trust me when I tell you that is not a strategy that will pay-off in the long run.
You can make one hell of a mess if you try to declutter your whole house at once. While you may move things out, you won’t have the energy to put everything you do want back in a way that makes sense.
So I want to hear where you started organizing your house. Did you start and stop? Start small and get a quick win? Or are you among the brave that started with storage? Share your experience in the comments section below.
